ONE of the Labour Party’s biggest donors has pulled its funding in London following the sacking of a caretaker in Islington.
Gary Bolister was dismissed from his role as a caretaker of 24 years working across Islington estates.
The 43-year-old was sacked by Islington Council for appearing in a Facebook live video opposing road closures in the borough last November.
During the clip – which Mr Bolister said he appeared in but did not shoot – an Islington councillor was filmed inside their home.
Mr Bolister and his trade union GMB said this was an accident and he has offered to write a letter of apology to the councillor involved.
But Islington Council has recently refused his appeal.
Warren Kenny, the GMB regional secretary, said: “Gary is utterly devastated by his sacking – working for Islington Council, where he was born and raised, was his passion and his vocation.
“His callous sacking over an honest error is beginning to look like political victimisation.
“GMB will always back our members and if Islington Labour refuse to listen to reason we will hit them where it hurts – in the party coffers.
“It’s a shame that other Labour candidates have to suffer the consequences of Islington Council’s actions, but that’s the way it is until this matter is resolved.”
The Labour Party in Islington was approached for comment.
