THE Commonwealth Games wasn’t the only multi-sports showpiece that sparked a sizzling summer of medals and memories.
Proud youngsters have been reflecting on their own fantastic feats after representing their respective boroughs at the London Youth Games.

Ardent athletes earned plenty of precious points even when they didn’t make the podium, helping Team Islington record their highest ever position at the Games with a 15th-place finish out of the capital’s 33 boroughs.
Not only did that beat their previous best of 21st, set back in 2018, but it also saw Team Islington honoured with the Most Improved Borough trophy.

“We have been on a voyage to take more pride in representing the borough and ensuring sporting pathways are in place to maximise our performance at the London Youth Games,” said team manager Daniel Bank. “This award, and achieving our best finish on record, is tangible evidence to Islington’s progress.

“We entered 25 competitions so there were plenty of opportunities for youngsters to experience the benefits of the LYG season.
“And we were remarkably consistent across all events with a few clear highlights such as the girls’ football.
“I want to thank everyone who participated and those who supported us.

As if scooping team silver in the kayak slalom wasn’t enough to put a smile on the faces of Ella Lamarque, Benoit Danzin, Emilie Leong and Louis Edwards, the fab four – who all train at Islington Boat Club – were given even more reason to get excited when their medals were presented to them by Olympic and world champion Joe Clarke, who won slalom gold at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

The team success came after some stunning solo performances, including from Ella and Louis who both won individual bronze medals in their slalom races.

There were individual triumphs in the pool, too, with Annabel Dewhurst striking gold in the 50m backstroke, while Lily Waite bagged a bronze medal in her 50m freestyle event.
The pair then joined forces with Anaconda Swimming Club teammates Sophia Bremen and Evelyn Cole to earn a bronze medal in the girls’ senior 200m freestyle medley relay.

The avalanche of medals continued in the athletics, where Koppany Szentes raced to a silver in the 1,500m and Tarrell Cavell landed a silver in the long jump. There were also bronze medals for Sebastian Calver and Atticus Davison-Law in their respective aquathlon and shot put events.

A skilful squad made up of players from Islington Borough Ladies FC also battled their way to a bronze medal in the girls’ football tournament.
After navigating their way through a tough group without losing a single game, Islington were narrowly beaten by eventual gold medallists Haringey.
Among the other big points scorers for Team Islington was the boccia squad from Samuel Rhodes School in Highbury who finished fifth, the trampolining team who came sixth and the tennis players who were seventh.
