‘Traffic and pollution levels have never been higher’
• FEELINGS are running high along the full length of Liverpool Road against Islington Council’s plans to force even more traffic onto this residential street.
Your October 20 edition had two full pages of letters all opposing the scheme. The only two correspondents wanting the scheme to go ahead were not from the area; one from LTN, low traffic neighbourhood-protected Highbury and the other from Warwickshire!
As a resident of Liverpool Road for over 50 years I can categorically state that traffic and pollution levels have never been higher and, along with the cycle racetrack that was foisted upon us without consultation, more dangerous to pedestrians than ever before.
Instead of creating these idyllic enclaves in select areas of Barnsbury-Laycock, the council should be putting all their efforts into righting the problem of their and Transport for London’s own making, the horror that is Highbury Corner.
Reinstate the roundabout and get the traffic moving there again. Drivers will no longer need to seek out back-street rat-runs leaving Liverpool Road and the rest of Barnsbury to benefit from reduced traffic and pollution, creating a liveable neighbourhood for us all.
