‘Good ball by Dixon… Finding Smith… For Thomas… Chaarrrggghing through the midfield….’
Astonishing climax to the 1989 football season is given symphony orchestra accompaniment

The magic moment when Michael Thomas hit a dramatic last-minute goal for Arsenal
“…IT’S up for grabs now!”
Any serious Arsenal fan can recite Brian Moore’s famous commentary without drawing breath, the almost rhythmic poetry that soundtracked the club’s most dramatic league title win.
But now the astonishing climax to the football season back in 1989, which saw Michael Thomas win it for the Gunners with a goal in the last minute against Liverpool, has been set to something even more artistic: a symphony orchestra.
Leading composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, a lifelong Arsenal fan who used to live near the old Highbury stadium, will unveil his alternative musical accompaniment to the action at the Barbican on November 5.
The BBC Symphony Orchestra will perform his work as the match is replayed.
Mr Turnage is dedicating the piece to David Rocastle – the fans’ favourite midfielder known as Rocky, who died aged 33 in 2001 after suffering from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
The event at the Barbican will see Lee Dixon, who started off the winning attack, reunited with some of the other players on the stage. Tickets are on sale to members from today (Friday) and will be on general sale on Tuesday.
