AN interactive game aimed at getting people moving around the borough has begun.

Beat The Street is a six-week challenge which works by walking, cycling or wheeling between sensors called “Beat Boxes”. Eighty of them are dotted around the borough.

Travelling from one box to another in under an hour scores 10 points for your team.

More than 7,000 people are already playing and together have travelled more than 25,000 miles between them since the game began on March 23.

The current leaders are St John’s Highbury Vale Primary School, racking up more than 125,000 points between 285
players.

Its designer, GP Dr William Bird MBE, said he set up Beat the Street in 2010 having noticed “a massive problem with inactivity that affects the whole country”, adding: “Most people just needed something to get them going.”

Islington Council commissioned the game with support from the National Lottery via Sport England. There is still time to sign up and start exploring Islington – the game is free and open to everybody.
