THE final round of fixtures of 2024 in the Women’s Super League fell in Arsenal’s favour at the weekend as they closed the gap on their title rivals.
Alessia Russo scored for the fifth league game in a row to earn the Gunners a 1-0 victory against Liverpool at the Totally Wicked Stadium. The margin of the win could have been greater, but Mariona Caldentey hit the inside of the post from the penalty spot after Russo was brought down in the box.
The result saw Arsenal move to within a point of second-place Manchester City, who lost 2-1 at Everton, and seven points off leaders Chelsea, who drew 1-1 at Leicester City.
“We can only control what we can control,” insisted interim boss Renee Slegers. “So we did what we needed to do, and obviously, I saw the Chelsea and City results as well. I’m happy we are getting closer, but there’s still no control from our side on what they do. We need to keep on looking at ourselves and keep on improving.”
