Cookery class at Gospel Oak school in 1953
• I WAS a pupil at Gospel Oak Primary in the mid-1960s, some years after the time covered in Jim Dwyer’s Gospel Oak Primary School Memories 1952-1956 (Review, January 16)and have many happy memories of those days.
Ron Lendon was a really good headmaster; he believed that the kids in the council flats nearby had as much right to a good education there as those living in the more affluent surrounding streets.
I remember Mr Williams as a kindly, funny, teacher rather than the caning “Whacker” Williams remembered by some former pupils. We had a school orchestra, a school magazine, French lessons and put on some great productions… Happy days.
Mr Dwyer says he is going to revise the book with later memories at some point – so all your little acorns out there who have grown in to mighty oaks, dig deep for memories and photographs!
