Harrington: Down in the pumps
Friday, 14th April 2023
ONLY space for a quick one this week, but let me tell you about Tim Casey who, 15 years ago this week, could be found closing up The Village Garage in Store Street.
It had been there since 1926 and was originally simply known as the Bloomsbury Petrol Station.
People used to stop and take a picture of its bygone appearance, as if a gang of jocks in a Thunderbird would rock up at any moment.
But back in the mid-2000s demand for a fill-up had fallen, not least because the congestion charge had started to deter people from driving in central London.
All good environmental reasons for those measures but Tim put one hell of a stretch in at that garage.
He’d been pumping petrol since 1974.
