FANCY a spot of gardening?

The call has gone out for volunteer gardeners to prune and plant in Newington Green, Hillside Park, and Market Road Garden.

After a funding injection from the City Bridge Trust, the Garden Classroom – a charity – has launched a five-year community gardening project which sees residents putting their green thumbs to work.

“You can just show up to whichever of the three parks you’re nearest,” said Paula Beatie who helps to organise the gardening sessions. “Bring a coat and shoes you don’t mind getting muddy – we provide the tools and hot drinks.

“We’re currently doing things like planting bulbs, doing a bit of pruning, raking leaves, and planting flowers that can go out at this time of year. Towards the spring we’ll be working with the volunteers and park managers to put in extra plants that we can pay for with our grant.”

Sessions run from 10am-12pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in Newington Green, Hillside Park, and Market Road Garden respectively.
