Sergeant Stevie Bull: ‘I’d do the same tomorrow and many of my colleagues would have done the same thing as well’

RESIDENTS have a chance to vote for a former Islington police officer in the Met’s bravery awards after she “just went for” a suspected gunman who was threatening hospital staff.

As first reported in the Tribune last March, Sergeant Stevie Bull was responding to a separate call at University College Hospital in Euston Road when she heard about an emergency situation through her radio.

The 28-year-old, who was formerly an officer for St Peter’s Ward but has moved to Hackney, said: “The male with the firearm was pointing it at a nurse. I didn’t think much. I sort of just went for him and we had a roll around and he smashed me into a wall. I got a bit of whiplash from my head and neck and that’s when security helped me and we got bundled through the doors and I got him on the floor in handcuffs.”

The gun was later found to be a starter pistol – something Sgt Bull did not know at the time.

She previously told the Tribune: “It could have been a real gun, it looked like a real gun and I treated it like a real gun. I’d do the same tomorrow and many of my colleagues would have done the same thing as well. I was just doing my job.”

And speaking about being nominated for the award, which the public have until Saturday to vote on, Sgt Bull said: “It’s been really nice.

“I’m a police officer, I’m the one who’s going to deal with it. Everyone else is a normal member of public. It’s me or no one, really.”

Others who have been nominated include PC Neil Dobson, of the South-East Dog Support Unit, who helped families out of a burning building in Croydon, and PC Luke Bowers, from the South-East Dog Support Unit, who held onto a burglary suspect in Bromley despite badly cutting his arm in the process.
