Highbury Corner: will traffic be worse after all these years of misery?
Friday, 27th April 2018

An artist’s impression of how the revamped Highbury Corner will look when finished
• AT a time when Transport for London is facing funding shortfalls, why are both TfL and Islington Council seemingly determined to push ahead with the anti-clockwise redevelopment experiment of Highbury Corner?
This will extend the painful pace of the current works well into 2019-20 and prolong the misery and inconvenience for residents and commuters which they have endured for the last three-and-a-half years.
The aftermath of the change could well turn out to be far worse. Traffic is already queuing longer to go through the junction, and TfL estimates that the greatest increases in traffic waiting times are on Canonbury Road, outside Canonbury Primary School.
As a result, a lot of traffic will doubtless push through neighbouring streets (for example, Canonbury Lane and Liverpool Road), which used to be quieter cut-throughs for cyclists.
Can TfL urgently publish its pre- and post- traffic assumptions and the council the environmental assessment (pollution) impacts on the bridge and roundabout works so that residents and commuters can see them.
We have a precedent for this scheme at Archway. Do we know if the traffic modelling has proven to be accurate? Archway residents were deeply concerned about traffic diversion at peak times. Were they right?
If it is too soon to measure it, let’s save some money by delaying and making a proper assessment, rather than imposing further construction, traffic queues and pollution on pedestrians and commuters using Highbury Corner.
