Governor Valerie Bossman-Quarshie: ‘Highgate Hill Academy is going from strength to strength’
• I WANT to demystify all those myths and controversies that often surround academies. I remember reading that usually when schools become academies it’s apparently because of failing results or bad behaviour… not the case with City of London Academy Highgate Hill.
As a school governor, I have been able to see the amazing new leadership shown by principal Prince Gennuh. It has become an outstanding secondary school, one which north Islington is most fortunate to have.
In the past claims were made that behaviour policies were too much like “boarding school-style” rules, with no speaking in corridors, going home straight after school and not using mobile phones. However, I feel these behaviour policies have enabled students, parents and staff to raise their expectations and aspirations.
It is most definitely a school built on integrity, as all the young people know the expectations of them, not only to perform academically but to have respect for themselves and others so they can thrive. When I walked around the school recently I got a good feeling. It was lovely seeing students and teaching staff really focused on teaching and learning.
The school has gone from strength to strength. You only have to tour the school, check into any class and speak to students to see a transformation that really embodies a pluralistic, holistic approach to teaching and learning.
