How can we curb Amwell Street’s downhill racers?

Friday, 10th August 2018

• I ENTIRELY agree with views expressed by John and Sally Carewe (Cyclists use Amwell Street four hours out of 24… but we live here and Hordes of cyclists come at great speed and they don’t care about any of us, August 3).

The cyclists’ lobby is adept at publicity and wants to make life difficult for Barnsbury residents in pressing for anti-social changes for Quietway 10 along Thornhill Road.

It has got its way over the preposterous redesign of Highbury Corner, with untoward implications, just like those at Archway interchange. The proposed new layout at Highbury Corner will create extra delays and additional pollution, make transfers from buses to trains more difficult and remove the valued 277 bus service.

Closing Corsica Street will make life a misery for residents in streets surrounding Highbury Fields, who will suffer from rat-running from Baalbec Road to Fieldway Crescent. Will cyclists use the new cycle lanes provided at Highbury Corner or take a short cut across the pedestrian forecourt link to the central area?

There should be a halt to the implementation at Highbury Corner after gas mains have been rerouted, and a public inquiry held at which an impartial inspector can hear evidence from all sides and make a reasoned recommendation based on the balance of benefits and disbenefits.

And a way needs to be found to slow down the inconsiderate cyclists racing downhill in Amwell Street.
