Too long a wait on recycling problem
• FED up of waiting more than six months for a response from the executive member for environment, air quality and transport, Cllr Rowena Champion, and Finsbury Park councillor Gary Heather, I shall be disposing of two bags of long-stored items in the general rubbish destined for landfill: mercury-filled LED lightbulbs and a pile of – clean – old, unreusable textiles, (The council itself must address some basic recycling issues, February 11).
At the beginning of this year Cllr Heather announced in the Tribune: “I seek to stimulate a debate on how we could reduce, reuse, and vastly improve, waste recycling in order to phase out incineration of that waste”, (We need a paradigm shift to reduce waste and improve recycling, January 21).
Arrogance, complacency, or simple rudeness? Whatever it might be, it seems that the elected member wasn’t serious in inviting discussion; or perhaps he was simply afraid of levelling with residents about a problem he must share with thousands of us.
Meanwhile if you live in the south of the borough and want to dispose of some small electricals (toothbrush, chargers, wires…) ignore the council’s official listing for Spring Gardens / Highbury New Park. It’s over a year since the facility closed…
