‘I don’t want a restaurant full of men’
Chef places job advertisement with a specific caveat

A RESTAURANT is recruiting staff – but with a specific caveat. Chef Hugh Cocoran, who runs the Yellow Bittern in Caledonian Road, placed a job advertisement on Instagram looking to employ someone to help out at the restaurant.
He had an odd stipulation, however, writing: “Not sure if this can be said anymore but a woman is preferential.”
“Personally I don’t really like to eat or work in a restaurant full of men,” he added.
When the Yellow Bittern first opened in 2024 it sparked interest for its unusual opening hours and layout.
The restaurant has just 18 seats and is only open for lunch on weekdays. There are two seatings, one at noon and one at 2pm, and the institution is closed at the weekend.
Customers can only make reservations over the phone or by postcard, and it only accepts cash.
Ten days after opening, Mr Cocoran also took to social media to complain about his customers, who he said were not ordering enough or correctly.
“It is now apparently completely normal to book a table for four people say and then order one starter and two mains to share and a glass of tap water”, the chef wrote at the time.
