• YOUR front page on November 12 drew attention to the plight of lonely and isolated black women.

It featured the founding by Gladys C Agyemang of the Black Women’s Link Project to address the problem.

I hope Ms Agyemang will also encourage the women to try the facilities already available locally.

She says “sometimes their English is very limited”, so they could look into the advice service Learn English in Islington (esol@islington.gov.uk).

Several Islington libraries run informal groups such as Knit-Natter, where they could meet and mix and practise conversation.

Elsewhere 50 different interest groups are offered by Islington U3A (www.islingtonu3a.org) run for and by local people.

I hope the women will be helped to overcome any shyness in venturing out into the wider community, not just for what they would gain but for what they could contribute.
