I tell my children it’s not safe to cross the road

• LIKE Ali Bird and neighbours (Liverpool Road’s traffic nightmare needs sorting out, June 4), I would like to see Islington Council’s plan to resolve the issues they have created on Liverpool Road.
Against the advice of a safety audit the council has chosen to reduce pedestrian safety by removing central islands at various busy zebra and other crossing points.
I cross Liverpool Road frequently, often with my children who are of an age where they want to walk on their own.
With the increased danger at the crossings I now have to tell them it isn’t safe for them to cross the road on their own any more.
There are no council policies that support a reduction in pedestrian safety and there is no apparent design justification.
No mitigating measures have been put in place to warn and slow road users. The issue has been compounded by a proliferation of cyclists, e-scooters, delivery vans and moped riders acting with impunity.
So far the council has fobbed off complaints with spurious generic responses, including suggesting pedestrians are protected by the rules of the road.
We are now told they will review traffic incident data but this will not capture the near misses or the stress the dangerous layouts put onto pedestrians.
These changes are completely unnecessary and should be reversed, with pedestrian safety prioritised.
And having gone against the advice of a safety audit, their own policies, and failed to listen to residents, if a pedestrian is injured at one of these crossings then the council must be willing to accept its share of the blame.
