Protesters against ‘people-friendly streets’ in Upper Street
• YOUR report (Second protest over road closures… stops traffic, July 31) was about people demonstrating against “people-friendly” streets.
While one understands some car drivers feel a need to get around easily, the present system, where cars dominate our streets, is not acceptable.
The council should be applauded for introducing quieter streets for walking and cycling. If those who are wealthy enough to own a car believe they should also control our streets, then it is also time for those of us without cars to feel safer.
I have been cycling around Islington for over 25 years and am a pensioner. It is cheaper, keeps me fitter, and stops pollution; often it is quicker.
Here we have excellent public transport. Even in Covid-19 times I have found the buses very serviceable and am sure if drivers got out of their cars, especially for the short trips, we would all be better off.
Also good to see stories on tree planters – it’s important to highlight the council’s biodiversity action plan.
