If you thought you were to be consulted about LTNs, think again

Protests against the ‘people-friendly streets’ scheme that took place last summer
• ISLINGTON Council LTN, low traffic neighbourhood, consultation? What a joke.
See this year’s council budget. Welcome to the “People’s Republic of Islington”.
If you truly believed that the council was going to openly and honestly consult with its residents who have had LTNs thrust upon them, think again.
Just check out the addendum proposals in this year’s council budget.
The proposals:
– financing the two new council officer posts to bed in LTNs in south Islington;
– provide 400 new bicycle hangars;
– provide new community street planters;
– raise parking fees to a minimum £110 so parking a car is not cheaper than parking a bike.
Why are these bike hangers so expensive? Bike hangers, community planters etc make permanent changes to the streetscape.
Council posts to “bed in LTNs” doesn’t sound like a council that is preparing to consult and listen to residents. The landscape of streets could be permanently changed before residents have had a chance to have their say.
Perhaps “it’s my party and I’ll do what I want to” should be Islington Labour’s theme song. Why are we putting up with such bullying on this issue?
