Inquests without tiers

Friday, 23rd February 2018

• CORONER Mary Hassell, who logically takes inquests in order of chronology, should be supported wholeheartedly by the entire ordinary community (Burials row: Corbyn backs coroner’s court reform, February 16).

The moment we succumb to the dictates of religious minorities seeking to queue-jump inquests, or demanding special privileges for their particular brand of “sensibilities” will mean sordid discrimination.

Where do bereaved secularists, of whom there are very many, fit into this ghastly tier system now being sought? We are outcasts beyond sympathy, however traumatic the tragedy we may face. Is that not the message? On the basis of religious quirks what may be expected next?

Ms Hassell is upholding the values of dignity and tolerance for all. Long may she sit on the bench.
