FLOWER power came to the Hungerford Road street party on Sunday as it went back in time to the 1970s.

A fashion parade – including kids in flares – was a highlight of a day that saw the Holloway street hold a party for only the third time, making just under £1,500 for the Islington Food Bank.

In keeping with the 1970s theme, children got to work making paper flowers, while Freegrove Road legend Betty Reisner made a bumper £160 selling plants. Rosemary Silver walked off with the top prize in the bake-off competition with a highly fancied vegan coffee and walnut cake.

The other big attractions on the day – apart from the weather – were two classic cars brought by Hungerford Road resident Gary Lazarus, who let people take selfies in them for money.

Mr Lazarus said: “I just said to people, by all means climb all over the cars and if you want to leave some money, great. People seemed to have a lot of fun with them, especially with the kids, especially with the hooters.”

The two cars were an Austin-Healey Sprite from 1959 and a Rover P6 from 1968, which had featured in the Brian Clough biopic The Damned United amongst other TV and film appearances.

The street festival also had support from the Arsenal Gunners, the Make It Happen Fund and the Guinness Partnership.
