It's bad now, but I fear the relaxation of lockdown

Friday, 8th May 2020

• IN the days immediately following the announcement of the lockdown, it was a pleasure to walk around Highbury Fields as my daily exercise.

How things have changed over a few weeks.

We now have joggers and runners passing, or in some cases blushing past, without any regard whatsoever for the two metres social distancing. Reminding them of this distance generally earns one a mouthful of abuse.

Similarly, there is very little regard or awareness from other groups. Families splay themselves across the paths, with small kids running anywhere and everywhere.

As for the 20mph speed limit in Islington, it is as though it never happened. Roads have become race tracks.

The prospect of lifting this lockdown, instead of raising my spirits, has exactly the opposite effect.

If people can be so lacking in self-awareness and so selfish in a period of lockdown, one fears what it will be like when the situation is relaxed.
