It’s not coming home…
Heartbreak for fans who filled the borough’s pubs
Friday, 19th July 2024

Council leader Councillor Kaya Comer-Schwartz was among the 15,000 packed inside the O2 on Sunday evening – she tweeted this picture at half time when the Euros final score was still 0-0, but sadly we all know what happened after the break
THE celebrations would have still be going on – and certainly have been on the front page of this week’s Islington Tribune.
Instead, as we have to record England’s Euros final disappointment somewhere, we’ll try to keep the reminder brief.
Everything had stopped on Sunday evening as fans filled the borough’s pubs, hoping to be bellowing Sweet Caroline long into the evening.
And when Gareth Southgate’s team drew level against Spain in Berlin, it seemed 58 years of hurt might be coming to an end. Did you believe?
The party came to a shuddering halt when the Spaniards scored again with only a few minutes left and England had lost their second European Championships final in a row.
Roll on the World Cup in two years!
