YOUNG aces from Canonbury Primary School struck gold for Islington after winning the London Youth Games Year 3 and 4 tennis finals.

Competing against 23 other London boroughs, Gaby, Ted, Osuke and Lexi served up plenty of skill and spirit at the showpiece, which was held at Redbridge Sports Centre in June.

After successfully navigating their way through the group stages with three wins and two draws, the Canonbury pupils displayed great determination, control and self-belief to beat Hillingdon 3-1 in the quarter-finals, before toppling neighbouring borough Haringey 3-1 in the semis.

The youngsters continued to shine in the final, where they beat Barnet 3-1 to be crowned the best tennis players in the capital.

Karl Beckford, Canonbury’s team manager, said: “I’m really proud of our pupils. Their hard work, resilience and determination has been rewarded in the best way possible. It’s an amazing achievement and memories to last a lifetime.”
