THERE are areas of the United Kingdom where nobody is asking any questions of the local council, the police, the health service, the coroner or any of the other public bodies that hold the power to change the course of all our lives.

Every month, there is news somewhere in the country of a local paper closing down and their online replacements drawn to a click-chasing diet of grisly crime, celebrity and football transfer rumours.

You may see other titles struggling on pretending that they are not a shadow of their former selves.
All the staff at the Islington Tribune are determined for that not to happen on your patch.

Our readers rightly expect there to be journalists on the ground asking why schools are closing, people are dying in mental health units and why it’s so hard to find somewhere to live – all recent stories in the paper. For more than 20 years, we’ve reported the news without asking anything in return – but now we have a small favour to help us protect journalism in north London.
By signing up to our newsletter service.

NewJournal+, named after our sister title, the Camden New Journal, offers weekly digests of news, a politics column and bonus features which take you behind the headlines in the two boroughs we cover.

Those who join the paid subscription will not only get even more access, but they will be helping to make sure that everybody, regardless of wealth and circumstance, still finds the printed copy of the paper in the dispensers every week.

It costs less than £7 a month and even cheaper on the annual discounted deal.

And we’ll be here… keeping on asking the questions. Find us at newjournal.substack.com
