WREATHS were laid on Friday to remember those who lost their lives in the 1987 King’s Cross station blaze.

A ceremony marked 35 years since the devastating inferno which led to 31 fatalities and many more injuries.

Among them was station officer Colin Townsley, whose service is honoured with a red plaque at the rebuilt station. He died trying to help a passenger to safety.

Pictures in the aftermath of the fire showed how the old wooden escalators had burned.

A lit match had fallen through a gap and set fire to litter and grease underneath the steps.

Later a fireball blasted through the ticket hall during the evening rush hour.
