THERE is a bright future blooming for London Heathside with a number of the club’s young athletes catching the eye during the England Athletics Under-23s and Under-20s Championships, writes Steve Barnett.

Liam Garrett, Jem O’Flaherty and Seyfu Jamal travelled to Bedford last month to compete in the Under-20s 5,000m final.

O’Flaherty and Jamal both took turns to lead the race. But it was Garrett who timed his efforts to perfection, opening up a considerable lead heading into the final 800m, before racing to victory with a time of 15 minutes, 10.34 seconds.

Jamal finished eighth in 15:22.22, while O’Flaherty, in a bold first race back from injury, was 14th in 15:43.86.
