Let down by social housing bosses
Friday, 8th December 2017
• PENNY Cloutte calls for a “proper investigation into the running of housing associations” (Tenants’ dilemma: how to get any repairs done, December 1). I strongly support such a call.
Newlon Housing Association manages a block of social housing flats in our neighbourhood. Over the last five years, there has been continuing anti-social behaviour perpetrated by a small number of residents. Newlon’s efforts in addressing the issue have been lethargic and pathetic.
Correspondence complaining about the ineffectiveness of Newlon employees and addressed to the executive board of Newlon (who supposedly oversee the work of the employees) was not forwarded to executive board members on the basis that such issues were dealt with by Newlon employees.
Newlon’s incompetence does not come cheap – four members of its executive management team trousered more than £100,000 in 2017.
Thankfully, the situation has now improved, but no thanks to Newlon. The improvement is solely down to the excellent efforts of Islington Council’s anti-social behaviour team.
I am all in favour of well-managed and responsible social housing. Newlon is unfit for purpose as a housing association but, worst of all, Newlon is virtually unaccountable.
