• FOR many years I’ve been looking in at the library each week, some­times to borrow books, very occasionally CDs and DVDs, but always to read magazines, and sometimes to look something or someone up in the reference section.

I’ve just learned that “We no longer take magazines.” Reference books like Who’s Who and The Good Food Guide – and no doubt several others – are out of date by three years or more, rendering them pretty useless.

It’s obviously not the library’s fault that it is “strapped for cash”. As someone who benefits from the Freedom Pass I don’t normally grumble at council cuts or money-saving measures. But it’s a shame, that’s all.
