Martin Rutherford

Martin Rutherford, left, with his partner Steve

THE world has lost a special man a husband, brother, friend
As a person he gave much of his life – helping others right till the end
He gave his help to young and old made right the wrongs of today
By making sure our voices were heard – a local hero that’s what I’d say

He often wrote to the Tribune – making sure we were all made aware
Of what was happening around us – asking the council to do good and to care
The knowledge he had was tremendous as he made sure he checked out the facts
So when it came to attention – he knew the law and the acts

He tried to make our lives better – by fighting for what he knew was right
To be sure we all had what we deserve – did all this alone day and night
It’s true he sat as a chair on the board a director of Popham 1’s TRA
Those were the days when HFI were around – people’s homes were invaded all day

But he made sure that the council knew when the works were appallingly bad
Made sure that people were happy with works – made sure it was good – they were glad
Not everyone knows that these efforts were made he never boasted or said a word
Yet people’s lives were improved all the time as he made sure your voices were heard

I’m sure your wondering who is this man – who will be missed & no longer in pain
Loved husband, dear brother, a very good friend our loss and Heaven’s Big Gain
Islington was the place that he lived – he loved his neighbours and friends
Martin Rutherford of Terling Walk went out fighting right till the end

So take a moment to say a prayer while remembering all that he’s done
For another Angel that found his wings –another caring and loving son
He closed his eyes and is now at peace but his memory and good deeds will live on
He made a difference to many a life Our Silent Hero – on Popham 1
