Liverpool Road’s traffic nightmare needs sorting out
Friday, 4th June 2021
• WE are glad to see your balance as a campaigning newspaper by presenting both sides of strongly held views on the LTN decisions and the Highbury Corner reconfiguration issues.
We recognise that the council is trying to make Islington a better place for people to live by discouraging drivers from various side roads.
However when you launch a radical project you always have to be ready to do something to deal with unforeseen consequences.
Phil Buckle (Now Liverpool Road is busier than the A1, May 28) is to be applauded for coming up with some actual figures that show the displacement of so many vehicles from Upper Street (leading to the A1) onto Liverpool Road, the longest residential street in the borough. It’s good to have some facts.
We have lived on this road for over 35 years and can’t believe the weight and quantity of traffic now using it as a preferred short cut.
It’s not just all the GPS-guided drivers (usually a lone male in a large car) but also the heavy commercial vehicles that have no business on the road itself.
We are shocked by the speed of many vehicles and the seething road-rage of many drivers.
At different points in the day we can see traffic stacked up from the Mackenzie Road lights back past the St Mary Magdalene School and even further.
It’s no surprise that the narrow, yet convenient, Furlong Road cut-through is constantly filled with rat-runners.
And they are all determined to rejoin the A1 at Liverpool Road / Holloway Road junction, just to win a time advantage over their fellow drivers.
Come on Islington. Elephant in the room!
You set up this nightmare scenario for us. We can’t believe you approve of it.
What are you going to do to protect such a large number of Islington residents of all ages who seem to have escaped your responsible consideration?
We look forward to hearing what Rowena Champion and other key councillors are now proposing to make a decisive improvement.
