London Zoo waits ten years for a baby llama – and then gets two in two days
Tuesday, 13th May 2014

YOU wait for a llama for ages and then two come along at once. Or something like that.
London Zoo welcomed the first baby llamas to be born at the Regent's Park attraction in over ten years, as two 'crias' were born within 24 hours of each other.
Named by keepers as 'Mocha' and 'Latte' were born on April 16 and 17 to two different mums, and were soon taking their first wobbly steps around the paddock.
Zoo manager Mark Habben said the team are very excited about the crias: “The first birth was out in the paddock… [mum] gave birth in full view of everyone on a very busy day in the Easter holidays and baby did so well, he was out in front of the visitors after about 25 minutes or so, and stood up to a huge round of applause. To have one baby llama is exciting in itself, but to have two born a day apart is just fantastic and it was brilliant for our visitors to be able to experience this with us twice too.”
Both llama babies, which can be seen at the Animal Adventure children's zoo, have now found their feet and are growing well, according to zoo staff.
The baby males were just 3 foot tall at birth, but will eventually grow to be over 6 foot, weighing up to 18 stone.
London Zoo have welcomed a whole host of baby animals to their menagerie this Spring, with tiger cubs and penguin chicks also drawing in crowds.
