LTNs are not welcomed by the elderly

Protesters bring traffic comes to a halt in Upper Street
• LTNs, low traffic neighbourhoods, are especially unwelcome to the elderly.
Really I could not disagree more with Alex K of N7, who seems to want LTNs everywhere to “curtail traffic” (Traffic curbs cannot come soon enough, February 11).
The new LTN in St Mary’s ward is completely unwelcome to me and all the other residents to whom I have spoken.
The adverse impact is especially severe for elderly residents dependent on taxis.
Closing Halton Road and Cross Street is an appalling imposition on taxi services in this neighbourhood, making taxis more inaccessible and expensive.
There was no consultation. If there is a consultation we have no voice without a computer, when the planners are all working from home and ignoring letters in envelopes.
This LTN is an arrogantly imposed privatisation of public roads. There was no need for the LTN.
While the air has been quite good and the traffic in Braes Street has been quite acceptable we now have additional congestion in Essex Road, Canonbury Road and Upper Street.
The LTN causes great waste of fuel and transport resources making very unintelligent use of what should be public roads.
If I were to take a vehicle from my front door in Canonbury Road to my back yard in Braes Street without a special permit I would have a detour of near to a mile via Canonbury Square, Upper Street, Angel, Essex Road, Cross Street and Halton Road.
Yet Alex K of N7 doubts the sincerity of those protesting!
