Make your votes matter

Friday, 30th July 2021

• THE First Past the Post voting system is a barrier to progressive change, repeatedly returning extreme Tory governments against the wishes of most voters.

This has enabled soaring inequality, underfunded public services, attacks on trade unions and callous and incompetent responses to Covid-19 and climate breakdown.

Last month Hampstead & Kilburn Labour Party joined Holborn & St Pancras and six other constituencies in passing a motion calling for the Labour Party to support electoral reform.

Tulip Siddiq MP and Karen Buck MP are also supporters of proportional representation – PR – and Sir Keir Starmer invited members to look at electoral reform in his leadership campaign.

The latest YouGov poll indicates that 83 per cent of Labour Party members support PR, which will make for an important debate at September’s party conference.

This Saturday, July 31, north Londoners can demonstrate their support for equal votes by joining the campaign group Make Votes Matter Day of Action on Kentish Town Road between 11am and 3pm.

We invite your readers to come and make their voices heard through our petition and try out the “Democracymeter”, “Writeathon” and “Wasted Votes Bin”.
