AN ELDERLY man has died after being hit by a car fleeing the police.
The police drew up alongside a car in York Way near the junction with Copenhagen Street they believed to be linked to a suspected robbery in Hornsey Rise yesterday at around 5pm.
The car sped off and struck a 74-year-old man who was later flown to an east-London hospital where he died this morning, April 3.
Caledonian ward councillor Paul Convery, who was at the scene, said: “It was a very upsetting and distressing thing to see.
“The paramedics were clearly working very hard to save the man’s life.”
Four men are believed to have jumped out of the vehicle and fled the scene.
Three were arrested nearby on suspicion of robbery and taken into custody where they remain. The fourth man is still on the run.
Cllr Convery said: “It’s a shocking reflection of the sort deep immorality of crime at the moment. These men started the day thinking they could somebody and at the end of the day someone is dead.”
The elderly man’s next of kin have been informed and formal identification will take place at a later date.
The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed and the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), who are conducting an independent investigation.
An IOPC spokesman said: “We are investigating the circumstances of a road traffic collision in the Kings Cross area in which a74-year-old man has sadly died.
“After being notified by the MPS, we sent investigators to the scene and the police post-incident procedure to begin our enquiries.”
