May must put right the harm caused to Windrush generation
Friday, 27th April 2018
• THE government’s scandalous mismanagement of the rights of the Windrush generation to continue living and working in the country they have called home for 50 years is unforgivable.
The Prime Minister needs to urgently get a grip and must provide certainty to those people who have been affected and their families.
Islington has always proudly welcomed people from all over the world. In recent years we have led the way in supporting Syrian refugees to rebuild their lives here. Our community’s diversity is its strength.
Under Labour leadership, Islington Council has supported many people to confirm their residency status and to get access to the support they are entitled to.
We are working to support future generations, including care leavers, who often face government-imposed challenges to securing their legal status to remain and to receive support.
We are at the forefront of providing advice to other councils about how they can support people affected by the government’s incompetence and unfair immigration policies.
The government must put right the massive errors made over the rights of the Windrush generation, but it must also look again at its discriminatory immigration policies. For our part, we will continue to ensure Islington remains a home for all.
