LONDON Overground lines running through Islington are to be re-named The Mildmay, Suffragette and the Windrush.

The names were unveiled by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, at an event in Highbury and Islington station yesterday (Thursday).

Figures including Fara Williams, England’s most capped footballer, and Arthur Torrington, a co-founder and director of the Windrush Foundation, were at the event.

The Overground between Stratford and Richmond – with stops including Caledonian Road, Highbury and Islington and Canonbury – is being rebranded as the Mildmay line. It will be coloured with blue parallel lines on the map.

The Mildmay was a charitable hospital in Shoreditch that played a pivotal role in the HIV/Aids crisis in the 1980s.

Meanwhile, the Gospel Oak to Barking line – sometimes called the Goblin line – is being rebranded The Suffragette. Barking was home to the longest-surviving suffragist, Annie Huggett, who died aged 103. Green parallel lines will be drawn on the map.

And Highbury & Islington line to Clapham Junction and other south London stations will be called The Windrush, with red lines.

The mayor – along with communities and experts – had been engaged with the scheme and it was for him a “a source of huge pride”, adding: “This is a hugely exciting moment, transforming how we think about London’s transport network.

“Giving each of the Overground lines distinct colours and identities will make it simpler and easier for passengers to get around.

“In re-imagining London’s tube map, we are also honouring and celebrating different parts of London’s unique local history and culture.”
