Sodi Cookey performs on June 7
HAMPSTEAD Jazz Club is small space that can nonetheless accommodate big talent. And sometimes it’s seriously big because Mayank Patel, who runs HJZ, has a track record for grabbing international artists while they’re in London to play Pizza Express or Ronnie Scotts.
That he also runs a record label helps. And since he took over the downstairs venue at the Duke of Hamilton pub, off Heath Street NW3, last November, he’s installed a decent grand piano and sophisticated speaker-system. So, as he says, “we’ve got low ceilings but good sound”.

This weekend the sound has British-Nigerian neo-blues singer Sodi Cookey on Friday; Ciyo Brown’s Jazz Guitar Collective on Saturday; and American vocalist Judi Jackson kicking off a series in which HJZ artists get recorded live, on Monday.
All start 8pm. Hampstead Jazz Club, The Duke of Hamilton, 23-25 New End, NW3 1JD, 07916 0595, https://hampsteadjazzclub.com
