THE borough’s mini marathon marvels clocked up the kilometres on Saturday when they whizzed around Westminster in the autumn sun.

A squad of 22 teenagers turned out to represent Team Islington in the TCS London Mini Marathon, racing around the 2.6k course from Temple to The Mall.

Islington’s quickest runner on the day came in the boys’ Under-17s race where Alex Smith recorded a time of eight minutes, 58 seconds to take 65th place out of 135 finishers. He covered the distance one second and two places ahead of teammate Gregory Berrisford Sweet, who was 67th in 8.59.
Lincoln Harrison was 108th in the Under-13s race with a time of 10.47
Meanwhile, the borough’s fastest athlete in the girls’ races was Kiara Corkin, who hit home in 9.46 to take 25th spot out of 141 finishers in the Under-15s age group.

Even Islington’s team manager Daniel Bank didn’t shy away from his running shoes as he tackled the main London Marathon on Sunday, completing the 26.2-mile course in three hours and 47.22 minutes.

Any young athletes looking to better their times – or who simply want to enjoy racing around Westminster once more – won’t have long to wait before getting in another lap with the much-loved showpiece set to return to its more traditional setting of spring next year.

“The mini marathon is a historic event that young people seem to really enjoy,” said Daniel. “We thank the 13 boys and nine girls that represented Islington, the parents who supported us and, of course, London Heathside Athletics Club. We expect to have an even bigger team when the event returns to the capital in April.”

Young running enthusiasts will be back in action in November when they swap the road for the mud to take part in the London Youth Games Cross-Country Championships.
