Moped riders deliver noise and pollution to our street

Claire Patel complained about delivery riders’ ‘engines running, revving, beeping and shouting’

• I SUPPORT Claire Patel’s complaints about scooter delivery drivers, who are also creating a nuisance in our street, (Residents kept awake at night by moped riders waiting to take fast-food orders, September 14).

For the past six months a posse of delivery drivers has taken up residence from 9am to midnight seven days a week outside McDonald’s at the end of my road. There are usually about a dozen bikes there.

They park illegally on yellow lines near the junction with Holloway Road, with no action apparently taken by the parking control personnel.

They are often obstructing the pavement, and can appear quite menacing in their leathers and helmets. They are not only delivering for McDonald’s but for other fast-food outlets on behalf of Uber, Deliveroo and other carriers.

My main concern, however, is their use of Jackson Road, which is a residential street, as their usual route to and from deliveries. This means scooters are going up and down our road all the time.

At busy times (particularly weekends) there may be 50 or so journeys in an hour. The scooters are very noisy, and are often exceeding the 20mph speed limit.

Jackson Road is quite wide, and links Holloway Road to Hornsey Road. As the road has totally ineffective speed humps, this means it is convenient for them to travel up and down the road as fast as they like, with little regard for the noise and pollution inflicted on residents, even though there is a much more suitable route very close by using non-residential roads.

The council and police tell me they are unable to do anything about this, although it constitutes a public nuisance and is severely affecting the quality of life for residents.

There is a strong case to be made for blocking traffic access from Holloway Road to Jackson Road and neighbouring roads, creating an environmental area, to provide the relative peace and freedom from traffic noise and pollution enjoyed by residents in wealthier parts of the borough. The geography of the road layouts makes this perfectly feasible.
