More mental health beds are needed in north London

Thursday, 4th May 2017

• SIX or Seven years ago, before they sold off the St Luke’s hospital site in Muswell Hill, Wendy Wallace, CEO of Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust, at the time, told me at a meeting that there were too many mental health beds in the area.

And that the facilities at St Pancras Hospital were far better than those at St Luke’s and that the money raised from selling the site would be used to further upgrade St Pancras.

I believe the site was sold for £26million. What has happened to that money? As for the trust’s options, where would they build “behind” the Whittington?

Contrary to what they are saying now, there is an acute need for more mental health beds in north London. Those beds should be situated within the communities they serve.
