JEREMY Corbyn agreed to give up his car for a month as he met climate change campaigners marking a national day of action on the environment.
The independent MP, better known for cycling, met representatives of campaign groups, including the Islington Environment Alliance, Islington Clean Air Parents and Power Up North London, last Friday.
IEA member David Twine said: “We discussed how our groups can work together with Jeremy to create faster change in Islington, such as by improving the planning process to enable residents to insulate and retrofit their homes and cut carbon emissions across the borough.”
Islington had been ranked the 9th most polluted borough in England in a recent survey by Friends of the Earth.
The local climate groups also arranged a meeting with Islington South and Finsbury MP Emily Thornberry and children and climate campaigners gathered at the Islington Climate Centre in Angel on Saturday.
Islington Climate Centre’s co-founder Anna Hyde had prepared a presentation about the centre’s work, building experts had come to talk to the MP about retrofit, and children had hoped to hand over letters asking her to take part in the same car-free challenge.
Ms Thornberry said she was unable to attend, but the meeting had been rescheduled.
On November 7, Islington Climate Centre will host a People’s Assembly on flooding at Brickworks Community Centre, where residents will gather to discuss how the increased risk of flooding due to climate change might impact the borough and what we can do to ensure we are prepared.
