A HOLLOWAY shop run by a mother and daughter duo hopes to be the face of reusable and sustainable shopping through a zero waste concept.

Kilo, in Holloway Road, has dedicated itself to achieving a waste-free future, starting in a restored building in north London.

It stocks usual food essentials but also offers some other items such as different types of herbs and spices, honey from bees in Finsbury Park and organic pet food.

“Our customers are buying what they need and nothing more,” said Jordan Perata, who after leaving an interior design job, started a shop alongside her mother, Emma Perata.

“Everything is sold by weight, and in reusable containers. The self checkout app that we also operate here makes shopping easy and simple, saving lots of time. Customers can also shop as normal if they like.”

She described how, every year, big chain supermarkets and grocery stores generate tons of non-biodegraduble waste from packets, bags and plastic containers that can severely devastate the natural world.

Customers can also get involved with the shop’s goals by using their Jar Drop service, dropping off and collecting their own jars when the shop’s staff have refilled them with their products.

Kilo try to get involved whenever they can in supporting and helping people that wish to adapt to a zero waste lifestyle, and they want the shop to keep improving.

Ms Perata said: “We’re always chatting to everyone who comes in and taking on all kinds of feedback into what we can do, as we’re still a new shop.”

Ms Perata, who opened the shop with her mother three years ago, praised her mother for always being “by my side” during the good and bad. Together, they hope to fulfil the shop’s potential as a key player in beating climate change.
