A SIXTEEN-year-old boy was fatally stabbed before crashing his moped into a lamppost as a man chased after him – but a crucial moment of the incident was not caught on CCTV, the Old Bailey heard this week.
Deonte Mowatt-Slater died from two stab wounds to his neck and chest in Courtauld Road, close the Elthorne estate in Archway, in the early hours of October 22.
Francie McCarthy, 22, from Tufnell Park, is standing trial. He denies murder.
Deonte was “very badly injured, somehow” and in a very grave condition, prosecuting barrister Edward Brown KC told the court on Monday.
“The defendant and the deceased came across each other in Courtauld Road that night and in the ensuing altercation the deceased was stabbed – not once, but twice,” said Mr Brown.
But there were no eyewitnesses or CCTV of the actual attack, the court was told.
Emergency medical staff found that Deonte had stab wounds to the neck and chest, which may have caused him to lose consciousness and crash as he rode from the scene of the attack, leaving a trail of blood in his wake, the barrister added.
A specialist team carried out invasive chest surgery at the scene in an effort to revive Deonte, but he was pronounced dead at 1.16am, the prosecution told jurors.
CCTV footage played in court on Monday showed Deonte driving his moped up Courtauld Road prior to the attack.
Loud revving and agitated voices can then be heard off camera, and moments later the moped is seen travelling at speed on the pavement back the way it came.
A man in grey tracksuit bottoms then runs into the footage, seemingly chasing the moped, and a voice is heard shouting “come here!” before a loud crashing noise.
The court heard that two “boys or men” shouted before the crash, in voices that were “threatening” and “not friendly”.
The trial continues.
