• I AM just wondering whether your correspondent Brian Bates, (Quitting NATO?, April 22), has given any critical thought to the role of Nato, and would say probably not given that the mainstream press isn’t doing so.

Nato, led by the United States, does not promote peace and it can be argued that the appalling situation in Ukraine is in some respects the result of its over-reach into eastern European countries.

US bases have surrounded Russia’s borders and one wonders how the US would react if Russia had bases along its borders with Canada or Mexico.
