MEASURES to prevent suicide deaths at Archway Bridge may be installed this spring, according to London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

Islington and Haringey councils approved plans to install fencing at the top the viaduct two years ago, but the work has been delayed after test barriers proved unsuitable. An initial design of a fence with horizontal wires was too easy to climb over, while a design with vertical wires was found to clash with the look of the Victorian bridge.

Campaigners have been calling for barriers for more than a decade to stop people taking their own lives.

Mr Khan said: “In late November, Islington and Haringey’s planners provisionally approved the design of proposed anti-suicide fencing – subject to agreement on the design of the end panels, and visibility of the finalised drawings.”

Haringey Council told the Tribune that work may start as soon as possible this year, but first the design still needs listed building consent.
