The Tribune reported last week that Una O’Halloran had been chosen by Labour councillors to lead the Town Hall – after just one round of voting

A NEW leader at the Town Hall means a chance to rejig who gets the top jobs, with speculation swirling over whether Una O’Halloran will bring in fresh faces or opt to keep things unchanged.

After sealing the leadership with just one round of voting in an internal Labour Party vote, she will name her cabinet next week.

Some councillors initially suggested that multiple executive team members could be at risk of losing their jobs, but only one post has been advertised for councillors to apply for.

Cllr O’Halloran is replacing Kaya Comer-Schwartz in the leader’s office after the outgoing chief took up a job with Sadiq Khan at City Hall.

There will be at least one new face at the top table as the new leader will not be carrying on her housing brief.

This could go to John Woolf, the councillor currently in charge of community safety but that would still leave a hole to fill.

According to one Labour councillor, a host of colleagues are desperate for a promotion, with applications flooding in from keen backbenchers looking to take a step up.

Another Labour insider told the Tribune that any big shake-ups would “just be disruptive”, adding: “Una’s just taken the position and she would not want to undo what Kaya’s done. She can’t spoil what’s at flow now.”

Another added that any major changes would likely be postponed until after Christmas. “People are going forward for selection as council candidates so it’s not the best time to make changes to the executive,” they said.

Former Labour councillor Phil Graham had not yet left the party when colleagues were left “upset” over Ms Comer-Schwartz’s decision to reshuffle her cabinet in May. He said Cllr O’Halloran would not make the same mistake.

“The way Kaya did it before was a disgrace, and I think Cllr O’Halloran agrees that it was a disgrace. She’ll take the time to speak to people before she takes them off the exec team. She wouldn’t just go in and drop them,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cllr Woolf and Santiago Bell-Bradford are rumoured as the two top choices for deputy leader. One councillor said that Cllr Bell-Bradford would be a “good choice” and signify a “definite move to the left” given that the he used to work for Momentum.

But another Labour insider pushed back, saying the council needs “someone serious” as deputy leader.
