AN ENTERTAINMENTS promoter is to breathe new life into an iconic pub which has stood silent all summer.

Beer giants Greene King put the Old Dairy in Crouch Hill, Stroud Green, up for sale in a nationwide restructure which put more than 60 bars on the market.

Customers have lamented its closure and it was described as a “landmark” pub in estate agency marketing materials earlier this year.

Even people who have never stopped in for a pint know the famous frieze on the exterior which depicts the different stages of 19th-century dairy farming, including grazing, milking and butter-making.

The permanent future of the building is unclear but this week Martin Besserman, well known in north London for the Monkey Business comedy club, announced it would be put to use for cabaret nights.

“The Dairy has been closed for the past few weeks, so we’re thrilled to be bringing this fantastic space back to life with a series of one-off pop-up nights,” he said.

The Saturday night events will begin on Halloween and dates have been confirmed for November 28 and December 12.

Mr Besserman promised “fabulous performers” and added: “These events will also support social causes with a very high percentage of the money raised going towards charitable and community projects.”

The corner site was once home to a working dairy linked to the Friern Manor Farm with the building constructed in 1890. The farm had previously rented the space for cowsheds and stables.

Greene King controls more than 2,000 pubs across the country but put 65 up for offer earlier this year as part of what was described as a “pub estate strategy”.

An estate agent advert for the lease is no longer on an online brochure of pubs for sale, but it is unknown if anybody has yet acquired a long-tern deal.
