New fees for wrong items in the recycling
Town Hall to charge landlords for ‘contaminated’ communal bins

THE Town Hall is set to charge landlords for “contaminated” recycling bins amid criticism of the borough’s recycling rates.
Under plans rubber-stamped at a cabinet meeting last night (Thursday), charges of £47.14 will be levelled at managing agents or landlords if communal recycling bins are contaminated with objects that cannot be recycled.
If the landlord does not pay the fine or remove the errant objects, then the bin will be left uncollected. If the issue persists then the landlord will be slapped with a community protection notice (CPN).
The new scheme will be implemented “as soon as is practicable”, council documents state.
On average, 60 contaminated bins are reported by the recycling crews every month. The new scheme could raise more than £70,000 a year, the council estimates.
