New homes on Wedmore estate are a good start

Whittington Park Meadow

Neighbours form a ring around the wildflower plot in Whittington Park

• I WAS disappointed to see letters criticising the council’s work to increase the amount of social housing in Islington.

With over 14,000 families on the waiting list, the council is doing what it can with limited resources to try to house those people.

The construction of new homes on Wedmore estate, 100 per cent of which will be social housing with local people the priority, is a good start.

It is therefore disappointing that opposition has arisen because the wildflower meadow in Whittington Park is going to be temporarily removed to facilitate the construction.

Islington Council have already pledged to plant a replacement meadow and will work with the community to find a suitable location.

I also understand that the meadow is dug up and replanted annually and that location was chosen so no mature trees were felled.

To me, this demonstrates their commitment to the environment. This small, temporary, loss will bring significant gains by ensuring more families in our borough have a place they can call home.

I look forward to the meadow blooming once again when the construction work is finished.
